Latest information on Embrahim Raisi’s dead
- It’s now confirmed, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has died in a helicopter crash near Azerbaijan border, state media reported on Monday.
- The cause of the crash of helicopter was unclear. Iranian officials said fog and bad weather in the area slowed rescuers’s response.
- The state media reported, in morning local time, that the exact location of helicopter has been identified. They also reported that there was no sign of life.
- President Raisi was returing with a government delegation that had attended the inauguration of a dam on the border with the Azerbaijan- in the northwest of the country, 375 miles from the capital, Tehran.
The helicopter carrying the president came down on Sunday in a remote and mountainous region of the country’s north-west, according to Tasnim News Agency, which is closely linked to the elite Revolutionary Guard. Rescue teams battled for hours to reach the crash site, with fog and snow hindering efforts.
State media showed video footage of a convoy of ambulances struggling to make their way through fog up a mountain road. Iranian’s foreign minister Hossein Amir- Abdollahian was also on board the helicopter as a part of Raisi’s entourage.
